Teeth Grinding in Children

Bruxism or teeth grinding is a complication that more often occurs in children. Grinding of teeth is a strange occurrence that even the dentists are not really able to explain. Some of the possible issues which may give rise to grinding of teeth in children are:

  • New growth of teeth
  • New contact between teeth (upper and lower)
  • Poorly placed fillings or crowns
  • Intestinal parasites
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Psychological factors like stress

How to stop teeth grinding in children?

Sometimes the teeth grinding in children are harmless, especially when they are doing so just to get used to new teeth. However, if your child is really suffers from pain in his/ her teeth then you should immediately consult a dentist.

Recent studies have shown that teeth grinding may be associated with bed wetting and other night-time disturbances. Ensure that your child is well hydrated (with water and not just milk) prior to going to bed. This reduces the sodium levels in the blood and actually lessens the likelihood of bed-wetting as well as tooth grinding.

If your children have already got rid of their baby teeth and the problem of grinding teeth still persists then you must consult a dentists. Getting it cured in the earlier stage can save your child from any major dental problems in future.
