The problem of teeth grinding is not just limited to adults. There are approximately 15 to 33 percent of children who have the habit of grinding their teeth. Children who grind their teeth tend to do so at two special times which are as follows:
- When their baby teeth appear
- And when their permanent teeth come in
Most of the children lose the teeth grinding habit after these two sets of teeth have come in completely. However, there are some in whom this problem persists. Children mostly grind their teeth during sleep rather than during day time.
Grinding of the baby teeth rarely results in problems. However, teeth grinding after the two phases mentioned above can result in various complication sin children like:
- Jaw pain
- Headaches
- Wear on the teeth
- Temporomandibular joint disease (TMJ)
Here are some important tips that can help a child stop teeth grinding:
- Decrease the stress level of your child, especially just before he/ she goes to bed
- Try stretching exercises and massage to relax the muscles of your child
- Your child’s diet must include plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Lack of water in the body can cause teeth grinding in children
- Go for regular check – ups and ask your dentist to monitor your child’s teeth to find out if he or she has the problem of grinding teeth
