Teeth grinding or Bruxism is one of the most common problems among children. However, it is not exclusively among children. About 20 % of the adults in US also suffer from this problem. It has been observed that people usually grind or clench their teeth during sleep at night but many of them are in a habit of grinding teeth even in the day.
Teeth grinding or Bruxism includes symptoms like biting of fingernails, pencils or chewing the inner side of cheeks. Children, generally, stop this clenching as soon as they get their permanent teeth. Adults grind their teeth when they are angry or tensed. Stress can lead to grinding of teeth during sleep. This grinding of teeth and clenching of jaw affects the dental health of the person very badly.
Teeth grinding and jaws clenching are a part of the TMJ disorders. The TMJ disorder stands for the pain in temporomandibular. In simpler words, it causes pain in the joint of the jaw. Grinding of the teeth can result from various factors. Some of them are:
- Stress
- Suppressed anger
- Frustration
- Anxiety
Studies have revealed that mostly the hyperactive, over-competitive and aggressive personalities are affected by Bruxism. TMJ disorders can have a devastating effect on our teeth and mouth. They can cause various disorders like:
- Gums problems
- Wear down the teeth
- Facture the jaw and facial muscles
- Soreness of the mouth or cheeks
- Ear pains
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Difficulty in chewing
- Significant tooth loss and consequently
- Bad oral health
It is therefore advised to stop grinding teeth in the early stages itself. Regular dental check up and self care can help you combat this problem.
